Churchyard & Cemetery Regulations

The regulations regarding memorials in churchyards are quite complex. There are limitations on certain dimensions, designs and types of material allowed. Marble and polished dark granite are not permitted, and designs of hearts, figures and books are also prohibited.

The regulations for cemeteries are generally less complex than churchyards but maximum sizes do vary from cemetery to cemetery.

Some churchyards and cemeteries have designated areas for ashes interment and many have specific regulations regarding sizes and materials of cremation plaques.

Once you inform us of the churchyard or cemetery where the stone will be fixed, we will be able to advise you what is likely to be permitted and can make an individual application to the relevant authority on your behalf.

You must wait at least 6 months after burial before fixing a memorial. This is to allow the ground to settle. Some churchyards and cemeteries insist on even longer after the burial. We aim to work to a timescale of 12 to 16 weeks from the date of the confirmed order. The lead time can be longer for bespoke memorials, or if our schedules are affected by periods of adverse weather.
